Trinity House in the Round Youtube Premier w/ Audra Kubat, Ohly and Lily Talmers – November 12, 2021

November 12, 2021 @ 8:00 pm - 9:15 pm

Trinity House In the Round will welcome Audra Kubat, Ohly and Lily Talmers for the  Youtube Premier of their in the round concert on Friday November 12, 2021.

Audra Kubat is a Detroit born singer-songwriter. Self-taught, Kubat began composing music on the piano at the age of eight. In her teens she started putting words to the music. Teaching herself to play the guitar, she began performing in local coffeehouses. In 1999 she created the band, “Stunning Amazon”, and in November of that year released a self-titled album. The band became locally successful and the CD paved the way towards bigger shows and media appearances.

In 2000 Kubat was nominated for five Detroit Music Awards, winning one for Best Folk Artist and another win in 2015 for Best Americana Instrumentalist. Since then, she has received nominations every year since. Kubat continued to perform solo and wrote new material, releasing her first solo effort, “Elixir”. This record proved to be a pivotal force in Kubat’s career, and was followed by ‘Untitled for Now’ in 2003 on my own label, Remedy Records.

This led to signing a record deal with Times Beach Records, with whom she recorded two national records – ‘Million Year Old Sand” in 2004, and “Since I Fell in Love with the Music” in 2006. Both records earned positive reviews, appearing in Time-Out NY, NME, Harp Magazine, Hour Detroit, Metro-Times, Real Detroit Weekly, The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.

Kubat has composed music for independent films, The Death of Michael Smith, In-Zero, the surfing documentary High Surf, and scored music for local theater productions at The Players Club, Cliff Bells, the Zeitgeist Theater, 1515 Broadway, and the Abreact Theater.  She created and performed an original score to accompany a massive projection-mapping spectacle on the facade of the Detroit Public Library’s at last year’s Dlectricity, Festival of Lights.

As a dedicated and involved member of her community, Kubat has been a member of the local Non-profit group, United Peace Relief, where she helped feed the homeless living in the city by distributing food and clothing. She also teaching music to children from the area, donating lessons and time to help create inspiration within young people. In addition, she taught at the nationally recognized School of Rock. There she helped young musicians develop their skills in writing, performing, and technical proficiency. Further, Kubat taught music to 5 and 6 year olds at Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit

Currently, Kubat is teaching songwriting as a part of InsideOut Literary Arts Project, a local arts organization that helps place artists in classrooms to share, teach, and help inspire.  She also works with Living Arts Detroit where she teaches Science through Music and Movement and works with pre-k students in collaboration with the national organization – Wolf Trap.

With a voice described as ethereal, and lyricism as wistful as it is cutting, Lily credits the likes of Joni Mitchell, Paul Simon, Gillian Welch and Leonard Cohen for her beginnings as a songwriter, and various odds and ends for her development as a musician and instrumentalist. Her sound is rooted in the 60’s folk revival, with moments that reveal her broad fascination with music— the influence of Greek, Lusophone, and classical music all subtly swirl around in her melodies. Her hope is not to be tied down by genre, but rather to engage with “folk music” as it is most loosely defined– that is, “the music of the people.”

Lily Talmers is a native of Birmingham, Michigan and recent (spring 2020) University of Michigan grad.  Lily did not study music at Michigan. She was originally a neuroscience major with plans of being a doctor but she discovered an obsession with songwriting.  It was 2018, while on an neuroscience internship in Copenhagen that she began to question her path. It was during this time she attended her first open mic, in Portugal, and where her musical influences grew. Eventually, her study focused on Literature and English.

Talmers has studied and plays piano, guitar, banjo and cello. She admits to having a classical inclination in high school. She was an avid writer as a child and teen and had a deep respect for poetry.  She explains that the most important part about songwriting, to her, is the language she uses.  In her debut record “Remember Me as Holy” she combines her mastery of the English language with her classical music training.

“My compulsion and obsession with songwriting is definitely lyricism, and the spirit of a song, what it’s trying to say,” says Talmers.

Christian Ohly, who goes by the moniker/artist name Ohly, first started songwriting when he was 18 years old. Growing up in a musical family he played piano and sang in choirs from a young age. It was in High School that he switched over to guitar and began to study the banjo as well.

Ohly’s first release was an EP of songs that he wrote on an acoustic guitar in his dorm room and later recorded with friends and released it in 2017.

His second release “Landlines” features accompaniments from a cello, piano, violin, electric guitar, clarinet, drums, bass, and acoustic guitar.  With Landlines the lyrics are moving and flow with the instrumental.

“I was listening to a lot of Frontier Ruckus during this new album,” said Ohly in a recent interview with Jeff Milo. “And (FR lead singer/lyricist) Matthew Milia does something similar where there’s so much detail loaded into one sentence and it’s all very visual. When I was recording the first EP, John, the producer, said ‘Why don’t you try to SHOW how you feel instead of SAYING how you feel…’”

“If I can show people part of the memory that made me feel a certain way, it might stand out and hit them a certain way.”

Jeff Milo wrote “Ohly prefers to just reflect on a snapshot — setting you, the listener, in the scene, in the environment, and providing key details that are visceral on their own, but still letting you color in the rest of the picture for yourself.”

The Detroit News stated “Landlines” features seven songs that flow smoothly together creating an atmosphere of calm while pushing for introspection.

Ohly’s music is influenced by his musical older brothers and such groups as the Head and the Heart, the Avett Brothers and Van Morrison.
